Yesterday, while I was trying to study in a swarm of flies, the man beside me was giving pointers to a little boy (who I assume was his son) on the art of playing chess. Nostalgia hit me and I remembered when my grandpa tried to teach me a couple times when I was younger… let’s just say it’s not for me. I watched them for a bit from the corner of my eye because they were super cute and people watching is one of my guilty pleasures. I finally went back to work and decided to make my game plan for how to attack 6 chapters in 3 days when I heard the man say something like “Good, you’re catching on. You must always be prepared. That’s how you win. You’re not smart, you’re just more prepared than your opponent.”
I literally did a double take when I heard this. How can you teach our future generations that intelligence is no longer important?
It’s actually really easy to succeed (while using your brain power too), let me break it down for you. My dad once told me that “the most important thing is to learn how to learn!” I never fully understood this until now. Don’t learn to win, to get the A, to beat out the person next to you, etc. Learn to learn! Learn in the present and learn to increase your knowledge or your cultural capital EVERY DAY.
*I’m not saying I’m going to stop studying/doing homework and purposely sink my GPA, it’s just no longer going to be my top priority. If I find out the best way for me to learn, it should come naturally. Hopefully :)
